6.0 ability to assign a different auto process table

Everyone,

Thank you for responding however, the issue I mentioned is being corrected in the next maintenance release which appear to be a Windows only issue. Using auto_processname will kick up a filePro error and will not allow one to use this process as an auto process table. When one uses a name processname_auto the error does not occur. My email was just to advise howe to avoid the error. The naming schemes presented are interesting. I did work for an IBM VAR who used a numerical system in naming his programs. He had a range of numbers that defined what category the program fell into. As an example programs starting in the 100 range might have been accounting programs; the 200 range might have been receiving programs. By using this scheme he had up to 100 programs possible in each category. Within each category there were sub-categories which indicated a report or form. These were rather limited as they were 2 digit numbers i.e. 125 may have been a report or 165 may have been a form. The programmers knew the numbering method and had no problems remembering what program may have to be modified to meet a new clients requirement.

Richard,

I will use seldaterange, selacct, selprodcode or generic names like that when I reuse the table for many different reports. But I like the names short in most cases so I do not have to type too much. And I like to know immediately if a report requires a special selection or auto table. Especially important if you have to edit the table and compile it to a .tok. You have to use the right auto table when you compile or the table will misbehave when you run it. That is why it is wonderful if filepro has given us a way to attach an auto table to an input/output process so it will compile correctly. This has caused me no end of grief over the years.

Nancy I usually use sel_processnsme or output name for b my e -v sel-output name or something that will let me know what this does.

Your suggestion makes sense. I worked for an IBM var who use numerical for program names this worked as the first number indicate the type of program it was.

That's really cool, Nancy. Never thought of that.

Thanks!

Just to offer another idea about naming process tables that work together, here is my plan.

report.prc - is the main process for a report
reporty.prc - the the auto table name if it needs a special one
reportv.prc - is the selection table name if it needs one.

When I list the directory they are all together, because they are alphabetically listing.

Has worked well for me for decades.

Just an FYI

Nancy
