You didn't specify, but if it is a Windows environment, I had an issue once where the machine would drop network shares automatically (I believe a setting in windows changes this), but maybe this is why it does not work the first time, but after that it will re-establish the network share connection so that the next time it will work correctly.  Just a thought.
