There's a good chance the USB-to-serial adapted you have does not provide
a Vista driver. Furthermore, if you solve that problem, there's a good
chance there is not a Vista-compatible driver for the scanner. Any scanner
old enough to have a serial port...
You can get a pretty good scanner for under $100 at any Office Max,
Staples, Best Buy, etc.
