Art,

I have had a similar problem with windows 7.  I ordered a usb to serial 
adapter from one company....because is was cheaper.....and never got it to 
work.  Then I order one from cables-to-go.....a little more 
expensive.....and got this one to work........finally.

Bottom line is using a usb-to-serial or usb-to-parrallel adapter can be a 
real challenge.  There are way to many possible issues.
