In checking my Hp PCL 5 Comparison Guide(1995), it gives the following
release dates for various HP printers:

LJ 3 March 1990
LJ 3D Sept 1990
LJ 3Si Feb 1991
LJ 3P May 1991
LJ 4, 4M Oct 1992
LJ 4Si, 4SiMx Apr 1993
LJ 4L, 4ML May 1993
LJ4P, 4MP May 1994
LJ4 Plus, 4M plus	May 1994
LJ4V, 4MV Sept 1994
Color LaserJet Sept 1994
LaserJet 4LJ Pro	May 1995
LaserJet 5P, 5MP	May 1995

DeskJet 1200 series	May 1993
DeskJet 1600C March 1995

There is a feature matrix sowing what commands of PCL 5 are supported by
which printers.

Although flimsy in comparison to the behemoths of yesteryear, my new HP
LaserJet 2055dn is fast, quiet and capable of fast 2 sided printing. It
also has a much smaller footprint then the older models. As for useable
life expectancy, at my current level of printing, thanks to using Printwiz
for reviewing most outputs, I should get 10 or more years from it.
