Checking the install disk is a massively good idea, as slow as it is.
You typically only have to do it before the first install on a burned
disc, unless you're not sure of the drive.

On the latter point, I've never heard any evidence that suggested that
burning any slower than the *disc* is rated at does you any good,
regardless of what the reader is rated for.
