It's not a length issue.  Nancy figured it out offlist by suggesting that I
make sure it's not built across @ud or the like.  It so happens that index
A, which I did not create, is built across field 1 and @rn.  I'm guessing
the @rn breaks it on the alien file, just as it would on what Nancy
suggested, since there's no @rn present in the alien file.

I have no idea why that index is built that way, nor is it really my
problem, by and large.  I don't use the index anywhere explicitly, having
made my own for my uses.  It's just...there.
