I have been using the subscription model for since it was released.
I am getting an early heads up on what will be included in the next major
release. Besides many of the added functionality is something some but not
all of my clients can use. In fact one of them was about to pay big bucks
for one of the new features that came with 5.8.01.01.
I know Mark does not like this, but I get to test the new or corrected items
before installing a release at a client site.
One does have the opportunity to read what bug fixes were made in the
maintenance release. If one programs are not having issues, then don't
install.
fP Tech has been very responsive in correcting bugs. Keep in mind that
there are many variations of environmental variables in use as well as
variations in programming technique. These all can't be tested prior to a
release.
We all test our programming for "bugs". The issue is that we can't always
anticipate what our clients will do. Years ago I had a client call telling
me that the cursor was jumping to the first field on the screen from the
bottom. I could not duplicate this problem. I went to his office and
watched as he used the program. Sure enough, the cursor did jump top the
first field. He was drumming his fingers while figuring what order to apply
a payment to and hit the up arrow key. When I asked him why he had hit the
up arrow key, he said he didn't realize he had. I then modified the program
so that if the cursor went from the bottom dummy field, top the top real
field and that field was not blank, the cursor returned to the dummy field.
A long winded explanation of how some bugs can slip through testing.
One other thing, when you have advanced knowledge of what is coming and have
a chance to apply it to one of you applications, it can give you an
opportunity to "Sell" the new updated version to you clients. That is one
way to stay in business. Sell the "sizzle".
I am in the process of rewriting an application used by my community. I
wrote the original program almost 10 years ago and made a number of planning
errors. I have corrected the file structure and revised much of the
programming making use of the new functionality available in filePro as well
as my auto sizing browse lookup.
Look a the feature set available and not what is missing. Can you make use
of the new features?
