Yes, we agree.
The issue is which hypervisor will best run an operating system that hypervisor vendors don't care about.
I would postulate that this is VMware, simply because they USED to care, and because they have such a large head start on the others. I do P2Vs for clients to VMware ESXi all the time, because I know it works.
When you said it was for a client, not for yourself, the "get the one that works" choice became clear.
I am developing a fondness for Oracle VirtualBox. I think in the last year they have made some amazing improvements it it. I'm not a fan of Oracle, and I'm wondering when the other shoe will drop (the shoe that came out of the box they want you to put all your cash back into), but for now the aren't bad at all. Haven't tested on OpenServer 5, but I may just do that.
We've literally got 150 different operating systems running on our VMware platforms for testing (including Ubuntu 17.04 as of this morning).
We run Linux servers for web, ftp, email (Zimbra), DNS, even our phone service.
But our old OpenServer 5.0.5 server still handles all of our invoicing and licensing, and it now runs just peachy-keen under ESXi 6.5.

Uhm, yeah. It's not like VMware ESXi has no bugs. I've encountered some.
The VMware devs put their pants on one leg at a time, same as the rest of
us. The difference is, you're subject to their whims as far as fixing the
bugs, while you might be able to either fix yourself or hire someone to fix
an alternative solution.
I personally happen to like VMware compared to several alternatives. That
doesn't mean it's flawless.
