The Surfaces and lots of newer laptops have very high density. My Surface
Book is 3000 by 2000 pixels in about a 14" display, and runs Windows 10. I
find it's usable if I run it at native resolution, but change the text
magnification factor to 225%. Note that some changes to these settings
require a reboot to take full effect. Most programs react properly to the
magnification factor re. text sizing. SOME programs react well re. sizes
for icons.

I believe the above is also true under Windows 8.1.

Interesting side note: One change with Windows 10 is that the system keeps
track of true size of each display (as long as they're connected via HDMI,
or built in), and so can also detect and report true resolution (dots per
inch). For the first time in Windows, programs can deal with actual size
of graphic elements. For instance, Print Wizard can display a page image
that is actually 8.5" by 11" on the screen. I think this presents some
interesting possibilities.

The disadvantage is the screen size and resolution. To read some things with this screen resolution, I need to enlarge the text. Although this is not exclusive to tablets, My new 27" 4K monitor has a similar issue based on the high resolution of the monitor.
