non-alphabetic characters

I realize that the visual representation of a character between 0x80 and
0xff depends on the character/symbol set that is in use.

Still, for one of my customers it would be really handy if descriptions
could embody symbols for trademark, copyright, feet ('), inches ("),
degree...

Displaying them is one challenge, entering them from a keyboard another,
and hardcopy yet another.

I can think of some klooges, but where is the elegant solution?
