For Windows based computers, there are a number of handy tools from Microsoft from their Systernals division. These are free programs that you use at your own risk. Never the less some of these are handy tools.
One such app is TCPView. This app lists all of the processes running, their PID, Protocol, Local port remote address and state among other items.
This program could help you in deciding what programs you may want to not allow to start when you system starts up or what ports are being used by what programs.
Another tool is RamMap, gives you a look at the programs loaded into memory and how much each is using.
Two other programs that are handy when trying to see where there is a problem, Process Explorer and Process Monitor.
This link is to the download page. You can download the complete suite or just those tools you want.
