Take a look at Hex Editor from BreakPoint software, www.bpsoft.com. I have 
used it for YEARS - I'd be hard-pressed to manage without it.

This not only allows you to see the data, but to manipulate it (edit it), 
in hex, character mode, etc. Even lets you compare two files, with 
resynching.
