Over a vpn is the only way I can connect to my copy of fpODBC :)

On the other hand I've been guilty of leaving VPN connection running for
days on a home computer, which is an evil bad thing to do.
I'm not familiar with Cisco's client access cost, but Sonicwall only allows
just a handful of connections, and charge $$$.$$ per user.
8 hours might be the only way to make sure they have enough licenses to go
around.
Also, it may be something to do with overtime, meal and rest period
compensation. If they cut you off, you can't complain that you are "on the
clock" more than 40 hours a week and demand overtime.
