sockets

Please understand of the 128 users, ultimately 40 might be in the pos
environment and thus need sockets. Usually, even a server has a limit to how
many open sockets it can handle. Using socketclose() allows you to release
and reuse an available socket. The credit card engine I use is sold with
"threads", ie how many simultaneous connections can you make. Once one is
finished it can be "reused" by another process. FP is going to continue to
do what they do with sockets. Sadly, I think, more and more developers will
migrate away from them due to this. This has been a hot topic for years and
I doubt you will see any change. It's not like they developed sockets. They
just found a way to make some quick money. And don't believe there is
anything else behind this.

I have to agree, although as things stand, fP would be doing themselves a
disservice of allowing a single license to be shared among 128 running
processes (runtimes). So it seems they need to both fix this and change
their pricing; if financially feasible, do away with socket licensing
altogether.
In the meantime they should make it clear that if you have 128 seats which
will be using sockets at some point during the day, you need 128 socket
licenses. And although you can save money by shutting down the process and
releasing the socket license, IMO that isn't a good practice, nor good
advice.
