I have a client, in New York, where one of the key people needed to add 2
more computer in his work space. Rather than run new lines, he took a 16
port switch which had just been replaced by a new 24 port switch. I
received a phone call that the system was running very slow. I checked out
as much as I could from my office here in Baltimore, but found nothing that
would have slowed filePro down. I flew up there and after much checking
was advised about the use of this switch. The switch was bad - the reason
for replacement. Once the switch was removed, the performance of the
network was back up to normal.

I recently upgraded the server and added some new HP computers to replace
older machines. This was Windows 2008 Std server edition and Windows 7 Pro
on the desktops. They are running 5.6.10 ODBC with the license manager.
Other than a problem with the Realtech NICS which came with the HP
computers, we had no problem setting up the new system.

As Ken and others have mentioned, there is most likely a hardware issue
somewhere within your network.

As far as the license manager goes, I have not experienced any problems in
my office nor have my client's had a problem except when they exceed their
license limits. I do not begrudge FPtech for adding the license manager to
control users. For a long time, one could purchase a 5 user windows license
and have many more users on the system. What I don't like, and I think
many other developers don't like, is this is a per session license not
really a per user license. Let's say you purchase a 10 user license and one
person opens 5 sessions, that will leave 5 more sessions available. So that
will be 6 people who can access filePro.

Once in a while the license manager can lose count, although this has not
happened at any client in more the 6 months now, the simple cure is to stop
the service and restart it. I quick fix.

If you need the features of 5.7 then upgrade to it.

PS: My wife works for a large hospital system. The IT department and
servers are in Richmond, VA and the main offices are here in Maryland. I
get calls from her when their systems are running slow or when she loses her
mapped network drives. In fact, they recently tried to upgrade Lawson
software system. They had to do this three times as the first two times
failed. Over this past weekend they finally got this upgrade in. It was
supposed to be available Monday morning but it wasn't available until 4 PM
yesterday. So, it isn't only your place second half network problems, there
a lot of other organizations which have network problems that have nothing
to do with the software.
