I also have built "alien" filePro files against the key and the data 
file in order to see if I could
see where the break happend and recovered everything but one record.

Backups are pretty useless if you need today's data and the backup was 
made last night.
Anything that is transactional in nature should also be creating a log 
file so that if you lose the
main file, you can recreate it from the last backup and hopefully the 
log file has survived.
I think I added a @rn field to the data section after a second time of 
having to manually fix
things up when I didn't have a log recording changes.
