     Is there some reason why you don't want to configure the printer as a
normal serial printer in SCO?  (scoadmin >>printers)

     That way you don't have to worry about whether or not the printer is
ready.  If the printer is not ready, SCO will hold the print jobs in its
queue until the printer becomes ready.
