test serial communications

Hi

Does anyone know how I may test serial communications
on SCO Openserver 5.0.7
I am sending data to serial printer for receipt, and sometimes
filepro can not open the port.  So I want to test port before
sending data to serial port, and if not able to will re-route to another
printer.
