help converting dos(fp 5.0 windows) screens to linux screens (fp .5.0.14D4) - some funny characters will not go away

i am converting dos filepro to linux filepro
i know to make the map first in linux, save the map, then edit copied 
map to head of linux created map
some screens will not convert well.
they work, but there are some funny characters.
they where a box in dos, now are funny looking
if i redraw the boxes in linux, save,  then look at screen again and the 
funny characters are back.
if i space bar out the funny characters, save, then look at screen again 
and the funny characters are back.
any suggestions what to do besides giving fp 400.00 for xfer?
