Sure, but *lots* of people don't want to go to the hassle of formally
voiding checks in real time "just to keep the software happy". 

In practice both the check stock *and* the printing should carry the 
check number, and they should both match.  Though, practically, check-
cashers aren't *nearly* as picky as you'd like them to be, and the UCC
really just doesn't protect you much at all, these days.
