Indexes

We all know that one can't create an automatic index while a file is being
used.

What, if any, would be the effect of creating a new index in a copy of the
file, and then copying the new index back into the original directory.

I have a test system which is a duplicate of the production system.  I
created a new index in the test system and copied it to the production
system.  I know the files were in sync as I had just copied to original file
to the test system before testing some modification I had made to a program
which accesses this file.  Nothing is posted to this file.

I would surmise that the index would not be seeing by any programs which
accessed this file until the next time they were loaded.  

Am I correct in my thinking?
