     If I were you, I would contact a good local computer store.  I have
rushed on-site to bail out people at local motels and schools many times
over the past several years.  I always arrive with spare parts and whole
computers, so that I could stick in some equipment and restore their backups
quickly.  In your case I would plug your hard drive into a good machine and
see what I can scrape off of your hard drive.  

    There must be somebody in your local area who could help...

    I didn't charge them an arm and a leg for running, either.  (That's one
of the reasons I won't die rich...)
