John,
I find keeping the menus printed out will connect the User with the
required programming most easily. The user tells me what menu and
option and I can then find the menu option and see what programming is
running to review processing.
I have found that trying to keep all the programming in a printed form
is a losing battle, especially on such a large project.
I found a trick to help both the customer and myself find a report we
need to run or review and this might help. I put a list of keystrokes
in the upper right hand corner of every report that stays in house. For
example, in the corner you may see this (557)
That indicates from the main menu hit 5 then 5 then 7 to run this report.
Now I can train the user to read that code - instead of asking "How do I
run the Year End Journal?" where do I go to print the "Customer Sales
Report". If they have an issue, then can tell me the code and I know
exactly what report is at question.
Of course, output that is distributed outside the company, such as
invoices, statements, and the like would not have such a weird thing in
the corner but maybe you are ok with that also.
I like the help file instruction, it is very useful.
