Record update -access denied

Windows Server 2008:

One of my client's has on a few occasions received this message.  I am aware
that this is a system lock on the record.  To clear this lock, the server
has been rebooted.  They have reached a point that they would like to avoid
having to do a reboot.

Is anyone aware of some other way to clear this system lock without having
to reboot the system?
