defined dummy field not viewable in browse

I've been wanting more "programmatic" control of the regular browse process
for at least 10 years.  It would be one of those "have to have this update"
type of things for me.

Was it ever on the wish list to have @browse processing?  Something that 
worked like the @keys in browse where we could set up special keys to do 
something from the browse window other than just U for update?

Is this another large kettle o' fish?
