There are plenty of "host based" laser printers on the market.  How
many are still marketed, I can't say, but a quick check of the printer
list at <http://www.linuxprinting.org> shows plenty of laser printers
that are not in the "works perfectly" column.  Start with Lexmark
brand as an example:

Yes, plenty of these are inkjets, but plenty are laserjets as well,
such as the "Winprinter" series.  Given that they supply Linux
drivers for some of the "host-based" laser printers, I would guess
that those are relatively recent.
