Subject: Upgrade question

Filepro 5.0.5 5 license

Open server 5.0.5

I am a filepro user and not a programmer. I have been using filepro
sense
the Tandy 6000 days. Over the years I have managed to write an open
order
billing system that has been serving my business well for almost 30
years. I
am retiring and turning the business over to my sons and would like to
upgrade the programs and hardware so that it might run for another 20 or
30
years. I know that is asking a lot but these programs have served me
well
and I expect they will continue to do so.

To that end I have ordered a new server and will upgrade filepro. My
question to you is this. Do I stay with Open server 5, upgrade to 6 or
go to
some other operating system? Is open server 6 as stable as 5? There is
no
filepro support in the Minneapolis area and little open server support.
I
expect this can be done remotely should the need arise. I would
appreciate
your comments. I am trying to avoid any surprises.

Although going from Open Server 5 to 6 might be the easier path in the
short run, if you are looking out at a time horizon of 10 years, it
would probably be a wise move to make the change to Linux at this time.
There is much more support available and it is growing by leaps and
bounds. You have the time to do this right. First step is find a good
local system integrator who specializes in Linux. Hopefully they also
know SCO. Depending on the particulars of your filePro installation,
you may have some work that needs to be done with it, so you may want to
retain a filePro programmer who is experienced with both SCO & Linux to
assist you in the conversion. It may be as simple as a couple of hours
or as complicated as a couple of days. It just all depends on what your
system is doing and how it's been programmed. But the bottom line is
that with a couple of knowledgable professionals assisting you, it's no
big deal.

Regards,

Scott
