Richard, some more things to consider:
Are there any other lookups anywhere else in either your
selection table/output table? If so, I would rebuild those indexes as
well. (Understanding that you said there is no auto table at play here
and also understanding you said you get the error right as you execute
the first lookup of the current file.)
Are your *cabe programs 5.6 as well?
Does the data look OK in that file when you browse it by rec# and put
key field(s) on the browse and sample beginning, middle and end of the
file?
Have you tried rebuilding freechain (then reindexing)?
Understanding that you are getting different results with the runtime
programs, it certainly seems like a tokenization issue.
