If it is going to be used as infrequently as you say, I would bypass the whole issue and use a remote takeover piece of software like PC Anywhere or Tight VNC.

That way the client would dial in / connect to a local PC thru a VPN and then do whatever is required. 

It's a lot easier to get up and running and can be done for the cost of the vpn connection. Tight VNC is free. PC Anywhere is more robust and a bit easier to use once set up. 

If the requirement is that the client must use a browser to see the data then this approach won't work.
