Odd Index Behavior

System SCO Unix 5.6  
Filepro  5.0.14
 
Some fool tripped a circuit breaker and the system crashed..Indices were  
smashed on a major file.
 
One field indexed was the date field (8,mdy/) 
Deleted and rebuilt the index....When I ran a program which used (10,mdyy/)  
date field to lookup using the newly built index...It failed...
I changed the lookup field to (8,mdy/) and it worked.
 
The puzzle is why did this work before and not now???
