Dear filePro friends,
The Survivor Series CD's are still moving off the shelf. I'm sort of shocked
by the great response, but then again it is a pretty cool set even if I do
say so myself. :-) (And I have been saying it myself for weeks now haven't
I, huh?) :-) Honestly, today I was just going to put up a reminder about
the filePro Survivor Addendum CD. The quarterly CD I will be releasing the
first week of every quarter. It will have a bunch of movies describing all
sorts of filePro code (from beginner through advanced... filePro functions
just don't break down into that kind of categorization... so, I'll be
throwing in whatever comes to mind.) It will also have some review type
stuff about products that are helpful to filePro users. It won't be a lot on
any single CD, but it will be quality stuff. :-)
Anyway, that was going to be the sole reason for this advert, but while I
was talking to one of the folks from Australia in the FP Room a few minutes
ago. Someone logged in and asked a filePro question. I helped as I could,
and the gentleman thanked me (as usual, he's a very nice man), but just
before he left, he said, "John, by the way, I have to thank you again for
the filePro Survivor CD's... they are just so great. I have been using
filePro for 20 years, all self-taught as I could find time from my work.
But, I am learning so much with them. I'm enjoying every minute of them.
They were WELL worth the money, and if you want me to advertise it somewhere
or say something about them, just say the word." Wow! This stuff makes me
feel so good. I thanked him did just that, felt good. He is a doctor and
yes, I could mention his name, but I've refrained from ascribing any of the
comments to the people who've made them. I think it just keeps things more
professional that way. (If he wanted, he could put up a note confirming that
he actually did say all these things spontaneously today, out of the blue.
I'm not just making it up... :-) But I don't expect him to or need him to
that. The comment was more than enough. About half of the folks using these
CD's are friends of mine, and it wouldn't mean much anyway to hear that any
of these people like my work. But when someone I don't really know other
than professionally says all the same things... I know I'm on the right
track.
This person for example does some really complicated things with filePro,
being in the medical profession. He uses other filePro consultants besides
himself at times I think, but he seems to be one of that kind of person that
likes to know how his business is running, and likes to keep tabs on it
himself. Understanding the nitty gritty of how things work in your programs
is the very best way to get them to work better, whether you are doing it
yourself or asking another programmer to do it for you. Even at the level he
is at, the Survivor Series is helping him a great deal, and that is what is
so cool. People have been telling me exactly this from the first day I
released these things... like I said, it's not me just making it up, honest.
:-)
So, there you go, try either of the links below, and watch the movie samples
of the fPSS. If you have already purchased the main series before September
1st, you will be getting the Addendum free. If you bought after that time,
and you are enjoying the set, consider buying the addendum subscription for
$75/yr. Many of you have subscribed to the addendum and did not ever get the
series. One last note if you are in this group. Please don't judge the full
programming series by the Addendum CD. The programming set is a methodical,
step-by-step, start-to-finish, soup-to-nuts course that teaches you
filePro... assuming you have NO previous filePro or programming knowledge.
Conversely, the filePro Survivor Addendum CD will have absolutely no
structure, front to back, step-by-step or otherwise... It is just a
mixed-bag, potpourri of stuff. It will TOTALLY and ALWAYS assume that you
already *know* filePro and in some cases a reasonable amount of system
programming as well. (This doesn't mean there won't be any very simple,
dead-beginner type things on the CD, to the contrary, but a lot of
assumptions are made a-priori... like you know about processing tables,
screens, files, indexes... and all the other infra-structure of filePro.)
So don't misunderstand the stated purpose of each product. You may hate the
Addendum and really love the full Programming Tutorial or vice-versa, just
be aware of that, thanks.
Have a great day/week/month/year... and, if you have been devastated by
Katrina, or are about to be devastated by Rita, my sincere condolences, and
good wishes for a brighter, better tomorrow.
(Carroll Corson, you at least are one filePro person in Houston... are you
okay? Let us know!)
