The universal answer: "it all depends".

On Wyse 50 keyboards that do have a backspace key, it natively sends out
the same thing as the left-arrow key. This is one of very few design
mistakes Wyse made, in my opinion. The only way for a host system to
differentiate between these two keystrokes is to reprogram one of them
(typically the left-arrow). The reprogrammed value is then added to the
termcap or terminfo entry so that key will be recognized. The key
reprogramming can be done manually, or a downloadable redeifinition can be
included in the "init string" (such as "is") of the terminfo/termcap.
