I tested this some time back and it worked great except for one thing. 
The lockfile is created in the folder with the maps.  It made it 
impossible for the other system to react to a lock that should restrict 
access.  If the lockfile could be moved to the share and kept there, 
then it would be much safer to do this.

I tested the record locking and all worked great.  I was very pleased 
with the results, except for the lockfile and a symbolic link from the 
one folder to the share on Unix would handle the unix side of the 
lockfile but not sure how that could be accomplished on windows.
