We eventually tried this on a much earlier version of freeBSD, and it ran
without issue. This was using the same fp binaries.
It blew up on bsd 4.10 and 5.01 and worked on 4.07 or 4.08. Those version
numbers may not be exact, but you get the idea. I concluded that there
must be something different in the libraries of the later versions,
but I'll leave that speculation to people who know this stuff far better
than me.
