...And I finally got my headsets working as fully functional audio devices
in windows, so it's no longer just a theory.
It was Service Pack 2 alright. The answer, right from a microsoft kb
article, (which that article still doesn't account fully for my case but
it's fix wirked never the less) is to rename %WINDIR%/inf/bth.inf so it is
ignored, and then install, reinstall, or update the 3rd party drivers.
Afetr that you get a new desktop thingie and my computer thingie and a sytem
tray thingie called "bluetooth places" and in there you can configure the
headsets fully in ways that the SP2 built in drivers (a control panel
thingie and a systray thingie) don't offer.

2 downsides.
1) the 3rd party drivers apparently make my cpu work hard since my laptop
cpu fans which are normally at very low idle, are screaming now. Rebooting
and or cleaning out the drivers and going from scratch may fix this.
2) the sound quality ain't too hot. (but they are both bt 1.1 spec headsets
and I'm bathed in lots of wifi) This may just be the mic picking up those
fans form only about 16" away.
All in all though, I think I like it more than not. Once I get it working
with the voip software I'll be style'n...
