My question is, "Of what is that an example?"  

Is that the name of the computer it's searching for?  I'll assume yes,
until told otherwise.  The better question is:  Under what protocol is this
taking place, and how are you detecting it?

Actually, the entire question fails to make much sense as posed.  If they
believe the UNIX system is searching for computers on their network, they
know where the requests are coming from.  If they can't narrow it down to
which protocol or subsystem, they're not a qualified "network guy".
Actually, they may be the "network guy" but they're not a network -admin-.

No offense.  Just too little data to go on, not enough specifics, and a
very confusing (and contradictory) colletction of what little information
there is.  As in ye olde grade school math classes:  Need More Information.
