Well, since the first thing the routine that pops up the error message
does is check PFBIXERRORS and immediately return without displaying the
message if it's not "on", I can't explain why you still get the messages.
You do have to remember that the message means that there is something
wrong with the index, so ignoring it is not a good thing to do in the
long run.
Have you rebuilt the index? Perhaps something corrupted it eariler?
Are you running with PFCHECKLOCK=ON to verify that you haven't missed
a lookup somewhere? (And set PFCHECKLOCKLOG to a filename where you
want to log such errors, in case your users "forget" to tell you that
the warning appeared.)
