Well, I really wasn't at first... but I might as well tell you...
Mark,
You're going to hate me... I just got a 3.73Ghz, 1066Mhz bus, 2Mb L2 cache
Extreme Pentium 4 for my new desktop box... which runs 667 DDR2 memory. The
CPU box says on it "For high end gamers and power users" Neither of which I
consider myself, since I still, almost with anal conviction, shut down each
application I'm using if I'm done with it, before I open up anything else. I
rarely have more than one thing going at a time. :-) :-( I have seen Rick
blithely start up 250 applications at once... while he is installing three
different packages and doing 12 vnc or Remote desktop sessions.... :-) I
just can't bring myself to think all this will happen without problem... but
it never seems to give him trouble. You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
Maybe with this new super-fast machine... I'll change. However, I shouldn't
get too happy. Tony just read me an article where optical cross connects on
multiple CPU's per chip are expected to bring Intel up to the 100Ghz mark
within 10 years... !!! Just sort of makes you cry, huh? The new cabling
for new systems won't be measured in Gb anymore, but who knows what... and
they will have little active optical to copper circuitry at each end. Hell
of an article. No, I don't have a URL. I think it was in an Audible.com
technology review subscription...
John
