I can sum this up in but a few words:

     "Web-based email is evil incarnate."

I've seen a few uses for it, but personally...I'd rather telnet into the
pop3 port and read the messages with the raw commands and my terminal
emulator's scrollback.

There are -way- too many ways to break web-based email, and the very design
of most setups is akin to many bulletin board forums, most of which
specialise in emoticons, proprietary mark-up languages, etc.  All the bells
and whistles you don't need, none of the power and convenience you want.
