Subject: OT:Fairlight on 'Stupidity'

In all my years as a member of this list I have never done what I am about to
do. Nor do I ever anticipate doing anything like it again. But, Fairlight's
response to a post entitled "OT: MS and e-mail' was more than I could take. So
on behalf of all the 'stupids' out here I decided something had to be said.

Dear Fairlight,

Perhaps you have forgotten the day you couldn't spell Perl or filePro. Since
even YOU had to start from somewhere does that make you a 'stupid for sometime
in your life? Obviously from your arrogant post promulgating your greatness it
wasn't for long though.

Remember, without us 'stupids' of the world you wouldn't have the opportunity to
include the 'stupidity' charge in your billings. You would have to compete at a
level where you might be the 'cluebie'.

What rings MOST STUPID to me is YOUR ATTITUDE.

This is my last word on this no matter...

Art,

Fairlight is relating a story of what someone, who is the system admin, did
stupidly. You are assuming that this admin was "green", If so, he should not be
a system administrator. If he is experienced, then he did a stupid thing as he
should have known better.

Also, he did not identify this person or what company he/she worked for. All he
said that this admin did a dumb thing.

There have been time where I have screwed up royally and I have over 20 years
experience. I have been lucky in that my clients tend to follow the backup
procedures I have set up for them and I have been able to recover most of the
time.

However, one mistake cost me $5,000.00 with one of my major accounts. They had
messed up an ASN to their major account and to get it out before they closed for
the evening, I had to comment out 1 line of code, We transmitted the ASN . But
in the rush to leave for the evening, I didn't take the comment out and the
problem wasn't discovered until 3 weeks later when they started to get
chargeback's from their customer. I found the problem, corrected it and ate the
loss. By the way, the total chargeback was $15,000.

I was stupid for not copying the ASN program to a new name and using the "new"
version for that one time transmission. This is the procedure I use now when I
have a 1 time problem at any clients.

So, if Fairlight wants to use this story, he can call me stupid for doing what I
did.
