|I'm thinking about using direcTV's professional installation
|(with fixed
|IP address) on our 40foot trailer that goes all over the US,
|and process the orders directly on our servers here.
|These are locations that don't have phone lines, and don't even
|have digital cell service in some places.
|
|I'm fairly confident that I can ssh or use the web okay, but printing
|picking tickets and receipts might be my downfall.
|
|I'm looking for naysayers why I couldn't print to a printer as follows:
|
|Unix Windows HP Laser
|Server - Internet - DirecTV - Dish - Modem - Hub - Laptop - Printer
|
|I know I couldn't print directly via samba to the printer
|since I'll have to use NAT on the other side of the modem in
|order to share it (probably via a foolproof Linksys switch),
|but I should be able to do some sort of local print with
|Anzio or PuTTy methinks.

|kinda describes what I need to do, but is this the right direction?

Walter, my own personal experiences with Satellite are as follows:

* Browsing is spectacular! That's type in www.google.com, and get a web
page back with results. Even online applications react with no noticable
differences between standard broadband or DSL connections.

<> That's where the good in Satellite ends </>

* I've tried using VPN and SSH through Satellite - dial-up is better.
Latency kills you here.

* I've tried WTS and pcAnywhere through Satellite - dial-up is better.
Again, latency.

* I've most recently have worked with a printer that uses Satellite, with a
remote graphics designer on broadband attempting to send print jobs directly
to a printer behind the Satellite. We're finding that large jobs (1Mb+)
will almost always time out. That's printing to the printer via static IP
and opening the TCP port on the firewall.

Wherever the Satellite is, check with your local Bell, or even some CLECs
that service your area to see if IDSL is available. I've found that in most
places where "DSL isn't available", IDSL is - which is a better connection
than standard ADSL anyways (albeit more expensive). I've found business
class IDSL 128 connections for the same price as static IP plans from the
Satellite providers (Starband and DirecWay).

Oh, I also was looking to use Satellite in my RV. There are antenaes out
there that will auto-seek the signal. Very cool stuff. However, one's I
found ran around $4K.
