This no toher info I'm guessing this is on an MS machine, and is
pre-XP or pre Win2K . I've seen this in the past and part had to
do with network performance. I'm also guessing it is a network
printer as most seem to use that mode today.

To solve that problem I redirected the print output to a file on
the local machine, and then printed that file to the network
printer. It took total print to file time down to 15 minutes
from 4+ hours. It was a big report.

And the old MS variants were tryly synchronous and insisted on
doing one job at a time and keeping all other things at bay until
done.
