The issue comes up every now and then in comp.sys.tandy.

My first experience with eMachines was when an acquaintance had
upgraded it to replace the CD-ROM with a CD-R, and had all sorts
of problem with making CDs. Upon opening the machine, I had my
first clue as to the problem -- the 120 watt power supply. Yup, a
whopping 120 watts in a micro-AT power supply, which apparently had
just enough power to run the system as-loaded from the factory. It
didn't have enough power left, apparently, to run the laser on high.
After finding a better power supply (while still fitting into the
micro-AT format) and installing it, the CD-R worked like a charm.
