Subject: Processing to add/create real fields in an existing file
Thanks to everyone who responded. I'll look into autoshuffle, but in
writing this response I think I came up with a work-around solution, which I
have underlined in my response below.
Following are some questions that were posted.
1. What is the format(s) of the file(s) you are importing.
Excel files in csv format. I use Jhimport, which works well for
the initial import but then I still have to add the required fields. I thought
at one time that a simple way to do it would be to create an Excel csv file
with every possible date field needed and use Jhimport's append function to
append these fields to the map of the file that I initially imported, but I have
not been able to get that to work. It suddenly occurs to me that maybe the
simple solution is to create the fields in a master Excel file. I can then use
the master Excel file over and over to copy the fields in the master Excel file
to the end of the Excel data file prior to importing it.?...Not filepro, but it
sure would beat the annoyance of typing the fields into each new map file!
2. How many different organizations are you getting files from
20 to 50 at any one time but they are constantly changing as we
always prospect.
3. How long do you need to hold this data
Two weeks typically, but I hold it indefinitely because I
always import the data into the "mortgage" file (which no other person
uses) where I do the initial processing. Afterwards I simply copy the
"mortgage" file to a new file appropriately named so that I can find it later if
needed.
My thanks again for everyone's suggestions.
Sorry I could not reply sooner.
Might I suggest that if this an Excel file, you can save it off as a
dbase file and the use cdcopy to convert it to a filePro file. You can then
export the values to you working file by setting up dummy fields or declared
values of the proper type and size prior to exporting.
