Tim,

I tried this on fP 5.0.13.

   Record 3)
      t1)
      t1)C & P TRANSPORT
(Record 3 has spaces before and after the ampersand.)

indexed on T1),
F, FF, FR, etc. finds Fred every time -- might be the fish, :-)
C& will display records 1 & 2 (record 3 is alphabetically before 1 & 2).
C(space) will display all three records.
selecting null displays the three records last in a file of 314 records
which has data only in T1) fields of records 1, 2 & 3.
In browse mode,
record 2 will display twice as data is in both T1) fields.
1 & 3 display only once because one of the two fields is null.

I also can not duplicate your problem.
Per chance do you have a corrupt record ?
