The honourable and venerable Jay Ashworth spoke thus:

I don't like prerendering. I prefer it if I hit 'v' and look at the
segments for any text/html segments. I have:

set implicit_autoview=no
set mailcap_path="/home/users/fairlite/.mailcap"

My mailcap is:

text/html; lynx -dump %s; copiousoutput; nametemplate=flt-%s.html

The nametemplate with the flt- is because I wanted to keep clear of other
users on a multi-user shell server. Season to taste.

If I have it set like this, I see any text/plain segments automatically and
any text/html segments are available for rendering should I use the 'v' key
and then hit <enter> on them.

If you set implicit_autoview=yes then it will automatically supercede
text/plain segments with the appropriate text/html segments, thus
auto-rendering. I tried it for about 5 messages before deciding I didn't
like my mail to auto-render their HTML cruft and switching back. But I
keep the mailcap around to give me the option of seeing it if I need to.

Screw 'em. The more they post like that, the less reasonable responses
they'll get. The less responses they'll get in general. They'll only hurt
themselves. I say, -let- them Darwin themselves out if they want to do
things Their Way[tm].

"Give someone enough rope, they'll eventually hang themselves."

Of course, if they'd like to -help- themselves, I found out the other day in
a newsgroup how to get rid of the annoying non-ASCII quotes that show up
oddly because they're part of another charset. It came up with someone
using Word as an editor. Apparently it's in Word under something like
Tools->Autoformat and then uncheck the first six options. I'm sure they
were using a newer version of Word than my Word97, so I'm not even going to
bother firing it up to compare, but I distinctly remember it was under
Autoformat...just not 100% sure of the top-level menu name.
