That is changing rapidly. As soon as RH 9 goes EOL at the end of
this month all RH programs will require yearly renewal fees.
Sun just announced that this week. Other are making rumblings so
that the buy it one time and run it forever model may have it's
days numbered.
The cheapest Red Hat workstation license will cost you $179 PER
YEAR, which turns out to be more expensive the the MS products.
So RH expects ongoing yearly income, and their license agreements
let's them audit for compliance. If you run more than 5% more
systems that you licensed, you pay the full license fee plus a
hefty penalty.
The mid range server is $349 PER YEAR.
So RH has seen the light since many of their products do seem to
fit the 'run forever' model. There are still 5.x systems doing
work daily. RHY want's to make sure that doesn't happen again.
I haven't seen any announcments on the Sun pricing.
