Subject: Looking for some upgrade advice
I want to start planning an upgrade of our company's server.
Currently we are using FilePro on Windows working off an old
Netware 5.0 server based on a PII-350 machine.
The FilePro applications themselves run decently and will
obviously run better if I simply upgraded the server hardware
and the network to GigE.
I was considering using Linux instead of Netware, but does
this mean having to learn something completely new or are
there some decent packaged versions that avoid some of the pain?
Any other options I should be considering?
Thanks in advance,
Boaz

Been away and am getting into this thread a bit late.
I am running filepro on win2003 server as well as having most of my clients
on windows server. Most are on Win 2003 but a few are still on Win NT 4.0.
As far as uptime goes. Other then for one hardware fix (bad tape drive) all
of the machines have been running flawlessly since they were started up.
Only after some patches were added of Norton anti-virus corp. addition was
installed have the server needed to be rebooted. In those cases, the system
was off line for less then 5 minutes.
My own server has been up since April of last year with only a few reboots
when necessary. One client is presently running one win 2003 server and a
backup server running Win NT 4.0. The NT machine has been running for about
4 years and has not been rebooted or down in the last 2 years. (Maybe next
time I'm there we'll reboot it). The primary server has been up since it
was installed 2 years ago except of the replacement of the tape drive.
I am not going to get in to the discussion of performance differences,
whoever, I have found server 2003 to be very stable and did correct some of
the file locking problems of NT 3.5 and 4.0.
As mentioned in an earlier post, a move from Novell to Win 2003 should be
fairly easy and take the least amount of time.
