<DIV>Thanks again for those who responded with suggestions. As several explained, power surges can do crazy things with serial connections. That was the case here. The Unix host had a 25 pin serial port and a 9 pin port. The 9 pin (tty1a) was fine; but the 25 pin (tty2a) was damaged. My hardware guy had a used mother board with a slightly better chip on it. Replaced the board and away we went. All is again right with the world.</DIV>
